Investigation launched after bolt gun accident
An investigation has been launched after an abattoir butcher was injured when an animal bolt gun went off accidentally in his hands.
South Derbyshire County Council have confirmed that it had been in touch with the Health and Safety Executive and that an investigation was under way.
The accident happened on Tuesday when the 48-year-old man injured himself in the stomach. It is believed that he had been cleaning the bolt gun at G Collier butchers in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, when it went off. Although a helicopter was called to the scene, his injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken to Royal Derby Hospital by ambulance. He is since believed to have been discharged.
Captive bolt guns are not subject to the firearms legislation, but a current slaughterman’s licence must be held.
