Search for local turkeys online
The National Farmers Union (NFU) is urging shoppers who want to buy locally reared, good-quality Christmas turkey to head online.
Visitors to the UK Turkeys website – www.ukturkeys.co.uk – can search for a local turkey producer using only their postcode. The ‘turkey finder’ database includes 340 UK producers, up from 70 when the site was first launched in 2005. The website also includes information on different breeds and why it is important to buy local, as well as recipes ideas and tips for choosing and carving a turkey for Christmas.
Shoppers can also enter a competition to win one of five Christmas hampers, which include a Kelly Bronze turkey and other festive goods from suppliers registered with the Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) scheme.
Michael Bailey, a seasonal turkey producer and vice-chairman of the NFU poultry board representing turkeys, said: “Nothing beats a locally reared bird to treat your family. This website gives the shopper a chance to support British produce, help the local economy and guarantee a product with a fantastic taste.
“You can also speak to the farmer who reared the turkey that will end up as the centrepiece of your Christmas dinner. There are hundreds of producers to choose from and all budgets are catered for.”
