Rees Roberts awarded Bicentenary Trophy

 - Published:  07 November, 2011

Former Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) chairman Rees Roberts has become the latest recipient of the Royal Smithfield Club’s Bicentenary Trophy for service to the livestock and meat trades. The Trophy, an Armada dish set with 25 golden guineas, was presented to him by the Club’s president John Coultrip at Butcher’s Hall.

Roberts was chair of HCC for seven years before stepping down last year. Accepting the award at a lunch hosted by the Worshipful Company of Butchers at which several Club members were guests of the Company he said he was overawed to receive the trophy. “I have been a very lucky person to be part of a great industry and to receive this wonderful trophy is a great honour.”

Previous recipients of the trophy, which has been presented every year since 2000, have included the former MLC chairman Sir Donald Curry, who was recently appointed to the House of Lords, Fred Mallion and Alan Stevenson.

Club vice-president the Baroness Byford spoke of the strong working relationship between the Club and the Worshipful Company of Butchers, outlining some of the Club’s future activities. These include the inaugural East of England Smithfield Festival at Peterborough on 2 and 3 December, that will incorporate prime cattle and lamb judging, and a national beef ribs competition to be judged by Asda senior meat trader Jim Viggars. She also outlined the Club’s involvement in a proposed major exhibition of British food, farming and the countryside in Hyde Park, London, in September 2013, and a feasibility study into a new London-based event.
