ASDA fined for out of date food blunder

The company admitted selling food past its use by date at its stores in Cannock and Tamworth during a hearing before Tamworth magistrates.

Products found by Trading Standards Officers included packets of cooked ham, beef casserole and grilled chicken.

The products were found in some cases to be up to 24 days past their use by date.

The court was told that both stores had previously been cautioned by TSOs for selling food past its use by date.

In mitigation Asda said it had now changed its stock checking systems and re-trained staff.

After the case County Councillor Carol Dean, cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, commented: "Consumers rightly expect to be able to buy food that is safe to eat and these Asda stores were letting their customers down.

"These operations are vital to safeguard the public and this subsequent prosecution sends a message to retailers, that selling out-of-date food will not be tolerated."
