Entries open for Scotch Pie award

 - Published:  26 October, 2011

Butchers and bakers are invited to compete for the best Scotch pie in the world on 15 November in Dunfermline.

Organisers have sent out over 400 entry forms, but independent entries can also be made on the competition’s website, www.scotchpieclub.co.uk, until 7 November.

The prize has significantly increased business for previous winners. Baker Maurice Irvine, the current champion, said: “People from all over have come into the shop to buy a pie and they have also bought other things, which has boosted trade considerably.”

Butcher Graham Murdoch, the 2010 winner, added: “The competition raised our profile considerably and has been really good for business.”

Founder Alan Stuart is expecting over 80 entries for the 13th edition of the competition. He said: “We get fantastic support and we love to see all the different products every year. There is a strong rivalry between butchers and bakers, and it is good fun to see them compete for the same title.”

The World Scotch Pie Championship was created in 1999 in an attempt to restore confidence in meat pastries, and support has not faded since then. Stuart added: “At the time I thought it would last three or four years, but the public and the media still look forward to it every year.”
