Survey reveals consumer concerns for frozen and processed meat
|
A new survey has found that 94% of consumers believe the animal welfare standards for fresh meat should also apply to frozen and processed foods, with 98% believing that supermarkets should enforce the same standards of animal welfare on imported meat as on meat from British farms.
The research was carried out by Redshift Research for sustainabilty expert AB Sustain, a division of the agriculture group of Associated British Foods and featured more than 1,000 people.
Johanna Buitelaar Warden, head of animal welfare at AB Sustain, said: “In reality, the meat used in processed and frozen products is often not subject to the same scrutiny as meat and fish on sale in the fresh aisles. The same goes for meat that has been reared outside the UK – it is not always required to meet the same strict standards as meat that has been produced in Britain.
“Evidently, there would be a good deal of surprise among consumers – especially older consumers – if they were to understand this. Our research revealed that the vast majority of consumers have a high expectation of the welfare standards of the meat they buy in their local supermarket or butcher, regardless of whether it is British, foreign, fresh or processed.
