Co-op celebrates peoples award
The Co-operative Group’s strong animal welfare record has helping it scoop a top RSPCA award for the third year running.
The retailer took the public vote to win the coveted RSPCA People’s Choice Supermarket Award for its commitments to animal welfare, particularly the roll out of it’s Elmwood own-brand range of higher welfare fresh pork and sausages.
More than half (64%) of the people who voted backed The Co-operative ahead of other finalists Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Whole Foods Market, which had been chosen by a panel of expert judges, based on each retailers animal welfare records. The Co-operative also picked up the award for Most Progress at the RSPCA’s Good Business Awards, held in London this week.
Sean Toal, Acting Chief Executive, The Co-operative Food, commented: “Animal welfare is an important issue for The Co-operative and for our shoppers and members alike, so we’re absolutely delighted that we have picked up this award for the third year running. The fact that it has been voted for by the public makes it even more prestigious and demonstrates the wealth of support behind our Ethical Plan and approach to sustainability.”
