Butchers’ Fair a huge hit
Butchers flocked in their hundreds to the northern premier of Meat Trades Journal’s Butchers’ Fair this month, an event that was voted “superb” by exhibitors and visitors alike.
The show, which took place in Bolton Arena on Sunday 1 October, was held in conjunction with its sister event, Bakers’ Fair. With 27 exhibitors covering all aspects of butchery and presentations by major suppliers, hundreds of butchers took advantage of the opportunity the show presented to source new machinery, get inspiration for added-value products and meet some suppliers.
Butchers interested in expanding into baked goods were also able to visit the bakery exhibitors.
In addition to exhibitions, the show played host to MTJ’s annual sausage competition, Champion of Champions, and MTJ’s first-ever National Pie Competition, as well as a butchers vs bakers challenge in the form of a Generation Game theme.
Butchers John Mettrick of JW Mettrick & Son in Derbyshire and Brindon Addy of J Brindon Addy in West Yorkshire were pitted against Lee Batterbee and Richard Patterson, bakers at Bradwell Butchery, with the butchers trying their hand at cake-making and the bakers getting to grips with sausage-making.
It was a close call, but the final audience vote saw the butchers lose to the bakers by a small margin, despite being praised for their “fantastic first attempt” at cake decoration.
Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: “The show was a resounding success and more than lived up to the high standards set by the first Butchers’ Fair in Newbury back in April. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along on the day for making it so special.”
