North Yorkshire butcher named Apprentice of the Month
A 23-year-old north Yorkshire butcher has been named Apprentice of the Month by UK meat industry training provider M.E.A.T. (Ipswich).
Adam Procter has been working at the Drake & Macefield shop in Settle for seven years, and received the national award while undertaking his NVQ Level 2 in Meat & Poultry Processing at the butchery school in Suffolk. He said he was “very pleased” and is now training to get the NVQ Level 3.
Adam, from Hellifield, was still a pupil when he took on a job as a Saturday boy for Craven’s independent butcher’s at the age of 14, and started working full-time after finishing school at the Settle College. He now dreams of opening his own shop. “My brother is the manager of the Drake & Macefield Settle shop, so I’m hoping to start a partnership,” he said.
Three months ago, another Drake & Macefield employee won the same award. Amy Stead, 21, works at the Skipton shop and receives in-house training.
Drake & Macefield partner Richard Teal said: “Staff training remains key to the business, particularly among our rising stars. It helps to ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of present-day trends and technology in the butchery sector.”
