Rugby ace backs meat campaign

Scotland rugby ace Chris Paterson is praising the nutritional qualities of red meat in a new healthy eating campaign.

A poster, launched by Quality Meat Scotland this month to encourage schoolchildren to eat meat, shows the record cap and point holder running on a hill near Loch Lomond with the caption ‘Strength. Energy. Growth. Red meat has it all’. The poster is being displayed in schools across Scotland.

The 33-year-old claims red meat is an important part of his diet and helped him recover from a serious kidney injury sustained last year during a game. He said: “Good nutrition and choosing top-quality food is an important aspect of training, and assured red meat, produced in Scotland, is part of that.

“Cooking is a source of relaxation for me and it is easy to prepare simple, quick meals to provide energy, protein and vitamins using Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork. Eating properly doesn’t take much effort – you won’t find a ready-meal at our table.”

He has now fully recovered and has recently been playing for Scotland in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Health and education co-ordinator with Quality Meat Scotland Jennifer Robertson said: “Chris is an enthusiastic ambassador for his sport, for fitness and for both living and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

“We are delighted to have him fronting the schools’ poster campaign for us and the important message he puts across to pupils so enthusiastically, is that eating properly can be simple and does not take much effort.”

Quality Meat Scotland is the government body responsible for helping the red meat sector. It also runs a scheme giving vouchers of up to £100 to secondary schools for the purchase of red meat.
