Industry grieves loss of AIMS founder member
Mark Newman, a founder member of the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) and a staunch supporter of the live market system, has died aged 52.
His death has been described as “a tremendous loss” to the independent wholesale meat business and to the Livestock Auctioneers of England and Wales, as well as his large family and host of friends and colleagues.
Mark was born in December 1958 to parents Bob and Pip Newman. He took a keen interest in the industry from an early age, helping his father out in his cattle trading business and six local shops, as well as at the Marlowe slaughterhouse bought by Bob in 1974.
Together, Mark and Bob built a substantial cattle trading and meat wholesale business. With the purchase of a second slaughterhouse in Farnborough, Hampshire in 1990, the business provided strong competition against the multiple buyers in local markets and indeed across England and Wales.
In recent years, Mark took over the wholesale business from his father, who is still an active buyer. He had many interests outside the meat trade, most famous of which was his superb collection of crawler tractors.
Mark leaves behind four children, stepdaughter Emma, two sons Robert and William and daughter Lizzie.
His funeral will be held at Cookham Church, Buckinghamshire on Thursday (29 September) at 1.30pm.
