Irish processing giant Dawn Meats has announced the acquisition of a beef abattoir in the English Lake District.

The company has purchased the Duerden Lindal Moor Beef Abattoir in Ulverston, Cumbria, which has a throughput capacity of 1,300 cattle per week. The plant, which was built by the Duerden family in 1996, has integral water and waste recycling facilities and recycles 80% of all waste streams generated.

Paddy Walsh, managing director of primary processing at Dawn Meats UK, said: “We have had a good working relationship with this business and are pleased to add this facility, which was completely rebuilt to the highest standard in 2009, to our three other abattoirs in the UK.”

Dawn Meats Group chief exectuive officer Niall Browne said the acquisition marks the beginning of a new expansion phase for Dawn Meats, which is already one of Europe’s largest suppliers of beef, lamb and pork.

“Dawn will continue to grow, thanks to the support of its staff, and its farmer suppliers, in partnership with its key customers across the UK and Europe,” he added.
