Asda named best retailer by British Turkey Federation
Asda triumphed at the British Turkey Awards dinner at the Globe Theatre in London, taking the title of retailer of the year for the breadth of its year-round range of turkey products.
The annual dinner was held to celebrate the fierce growth of the turkey industry and the diversity and innovation of products now available. England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence presented the awards, while Strictly Come Dancing Star Anton Du Beke kept the audience amused during the evening.
An independent panel of judges, which included an experienced food journalist and catering expert, as well as three consumers, found seven category winners from the 73 products, judging on taste, value for money and suitability for the target market.
Kelly’s turkeys won the prestigious best Christmas Traditional Product of the year award for its free-range KellyBronze turkeys, with best Christmas convenience product going to Sainsbury’s free-range bronze turkey breast joint. Sainsbury’s also won best innovative product for its Asian stir-fry offering, with its applewood smoked carvery turkey taking best ready-to-eat product. Morrisons took the best meal solution for its hot and spicy turkey steaks, while Parkham Chilled Foods’ Haycliffe Farm easy-carve breast won the best catering product.
Lorna Cousins, chairman of the British turkey publicity and marketing committee, said: “We must congratulate the retailers and producers for the incredible excellence achieved in this sector. The British turkey industry’s continual high standards of quality and innovation is clearly evident in the all-year-round offering on the supermarkets shelves and these awards give great recognition to this.”
The dinner raised more than £9,000 for children’s medical charity Sparks and Dravet Syndrome UK.
