Tesco launches first ever Sunday roast sarnie

Tesco has launched the first-ever Sunday roast sandwich as part of a new range of meat-based fillings inspired by the revival of British cuisine.

The Sunday roast sandwich, which goes on sale this week, is filled with roast chicken, potatoes, parsnip purée and pork stuffing and sold in distinctive Union Jack packaging.

Tesco chilled food range developer Kathryn Bettles said: “We think this is the ultimate British sandwich and it has been created as a special treat for those people who cannot wait all week long for their Sunday roast, as well as for anyone who may have missed a meal and needs something filling to keep them going.”

Other sandwiches in the range include Hog roast, Finest beef and ale, British ham and watercress, British ham and picalilli and a Coronation chicken wrap. “Demand for traditional British dishes is currently going through the roof, so we thought shoppers would love a range of sandwiches inspired by some of our classic dishes,” added Bettles.

Tesco reports that demand for British food has soared in the last year, with millions of extra sales of British classics, such as: sausage and mash; shepherd’s pie; liver, bacon and mash; and roast chicken pie.
The surge has been accredited to TV chefs, top restaurants and gastro pubs promoting traditional British cuisine.
