Speciality foodstuffs forgotten

Regional specialities such as Welsh Beef & Lamb, Traditional Cumberland Sausages and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies are being forgotten by the British public, according to a new survey by Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).

The survey of 1,000 consumers responsible for the household grocery shopping showed that 88% of the British public are proud of the region they live in, but almost one-third are unable to name any produce synonymous with their area.

The survey revealed that 74% of the public would be prepared to seek out and pay a bit more for authentic regional products, leading HCC to call for people to get better acquainted with Britain’s speciality produce.

Nineteen UK products have acheived Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which is awarded by the EU to regional food products with a proven quality, reputation or defined characteristic specific to that area.

The UK is a long way behind its European neighbours, France and Italy, which have 106 and 87 PGI approved products respectively.
