Thieves targeting bacon

Staff at the Londis store in Trafalgar Street, Burnley have now removed bacon from the self-service counter. A sign above the freezer reads: "Due to the fact that our bacon is so delicious, the shoplifters can't resist it. If you would like to try some, please ask at the tills."

Local police now report that bacon, because of its price, the ease with which it can be hidden and its easy resaleability is now a prime target for heroin addicts.

Sgt Phil Carter, of Burnley Police explained to local media: "Heroin addicts steal it, along with items like coffee, because it is an easy commodity to sell and easy to conceal in a jacket."
