Scottish sausage factory closes

A Dumfries sausage factory owned by Browns Food Group is closing, with the potential loss of 15 jobs.

Mostell Ltd, which announced it is closing the plant, blamed the decision on the loss of a major contract.

In a letter to employees, company secretary Susan Godfrey said: “It is with regret that the directors have made the decision to close down the Locharbriggs sausage plant.

“It has been necessary for Mostell to review its operations in view of the loss of the Triton contract. As you will be aware, this contract contributed to in excess of 50% of the turnover for the plant.

“In addition to this, the average selling price for sausages has halved and the commercial implications resulting from this have had to be considered.”

The company was set up 11 years ago to meet growing demand for outsourced food products from around the world. The 12-acre site at Locharbriggs is also home to the 5,500 metric ton cold store, and the transport fleet of Mostell Logistics.

Browns Food Group recently announced the restructuring of another of its companies, Belcher Food Group, with 19 jobs being made redundant. The company, which was acquired in 2008, processes sausages, chicken and beefburgers for the major retailers and foodservice from its Prestwick factory.
