Corned Beef Pasty campaign targets Welsh National Assembly
|
A campaign to get the Corned Beef Pasty recognised as the Welsh national dish will hand in a petition at the nation’s parliament this week
The move, which has been instigated by pie and pasty producer Peter’s, will see a petition delivered at 10.30am on Thursday, 25 August at the Welsh National Assembly.
Since the campaign began at Caerphilly Castle in April, Peter’s has been petitioning for support, with a campaign that has included nationwide sampling in Tesco and Asda stores, touring from Cardiff to Wrexham and from Haverfordwest to Chepstow.
Peter’s also made a visit to the Royal Welsh Show on the way, where the company spoke to hundreds of people attending the show in a bid to win their support.
More than 2,000 people across the nation have backed the campaign, signing petitions, participating in taste tests and getting involved with a recently-launched social media campaign.
William Graham, Conservative AM for South Wales East, who has agreed to receive the petition, said: “Peter’s has already gained a huge amount of backing for their campaign, which shows how important a part of our national heritage the Welsh people feel the corned beef pasty is.”
Clare Morgan, marketing controller for Peter’s, said: “It was always our intention that, with enough support from the public, we would try to win backing for the campaign at the highest level. Being able to present the petition to the Welsh Assembly is a fantastic opportunity to add a major boost to the campaign, and we’re thrilled to have gained William Graham’s support.”
Peter’s will also be providing free corned beef pasties from its pie-mobile to passers-by outside the Assembly on the day, and hundreds more will be distributed around Cardiff city centre to secure more support from the public.
