EBLEX leads export drive in Algeria

EBLEX Export manager J P Garnier was joined by four major sheep exporters on a high profile mission to the Republic of Algeria earlier this month. The trip was organised in collaboration with the British Embassy and the Algerian authorities.

The UK hasn't exported lamb to Algeria since the 1980s but the country is a potentially lucrative market for UK sheep meat, consuming around 100,000 tonnes of sheep meat per year.

Algeria has a population of around 35 million and meat consumption is rising slowly from around 20kg/head/year in 2005 to 22kg this year; a trend economists believe will continue.

J P Garnier said "Algeria is a country with a great potential for sheep meat exports. Sheep meat is highly prized there. Although the rate of duty is currently high, it is due to fall in line with a trade agreement with the European Union.

"The trip itself was very successful; we met with major meat importers and had very fruitful conversations about future supplies of fresh lamb and frozen mutton.

"We hope to start trading soon and EBLEX is optimistic that this will be just the beginning of growing trade relations between the two countries."
