Waitrose's turkey blunder

Waitrose has rather embarrassingly had to withdraw its shortlisted entry for the British Turkey Awards after it found that the Cornish Palm was mistakenly labelled as the rare breed Royal Palm.

Janice Houghton-Wallace, of Turkey Club UK, said: "We do not consider the Cornish Palm a rare breed. It is a double-breasted bird. The Royal Palm is a single-breasted bird standardised for exhibitions."

However, she said Waitrose's mistake was due to the fact that it had not done its homework. "We are keen to help supermarkets work with rare breeds but it has to be done in the right way and marketed in the right way."

A spokeswoman for Waitrose told MTJ: "We have discovered an error in the name of a turkey on sale last Christmas (Cornish Palm mistakenly identified as Royal Palm). Although we already had no plans to continue selling the breed, we have asked our supplier to withdraw it from the British Turkey Awards."
