Industry members in charity challenge

Red meat industry members have taken part in a gruelling physical challenge in an effort to raise money for charity.

A total of 72 contestants competed on the rough terrain of the rough terrain of the Dorset Purbeck Hills and River Frome to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK, a charity which grants wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.

Eighteen teams of four took up the challenge of completing the race, organised by the RWM Food Group based at Langport, Somerset. The course consisted of a 4 mile run, a 5km kayak on the River Frome, a 40km cycle incorporating both on and off road riding and a vertical limit challenge.

Task participants were all connected to the red meat industry: including employees from Tesco, Somerfield, Samworth Brothers, Hilton Retail, Foyle Meats, Leading Edge, DBC, Sealed Air, Custom House, Milstead Langdon and RWM Food Group.

Graham Heffer, Managing Director RWM Group and joint organiser of the event said: "It has been a hugely successful event and we very much hope to organise the challenge again in 2010. Peak physical fitness of all team members was a must to complete all stages and the team work was just fantastic."

Within each stage there were a series of checkpoints and the winners were the team that accumulated the most points from each check in within the time limit.

Participant Jerry Crocker, Commercial Manager, RWM Food Group said: "It was one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done. Everyone got something out of it and had to overcome their own personal fears and challenges, whether it was cycling 40km or balancing on a see-saw 50ft in the air!"

The teams individually raised funds which were pledged at the event as well as donating a major auction prize. Signed celebrity items were also sold on eBay, helping to achieve the tremendous fundraising total of £51,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.

The Make-A-Wish charity will hugely benefit from the pledged money. The funds will help in the charity's bid to make 21 wishes a week come true by 2010. To date they have made 5,000 wishes come true since being founded ranging from trips to Disneyland to becoming a postman for the day.
