China lifts export restrictions
Defra has announced that Chinese restrictions on the import of UK livestock and livestock products to China have been lifted.
The restrictions, put in place following the 2007 foot and mouth outbreak in Surrey, were lifted following a combined effort by Defra, UK industry and the British Embassy in Beijing. UK meat exports to China can now recommence.
The Chinese announcement provides an exclusion window of 7 July 2007 to 7 August 2008. UK products manufactured outside of these dates can be exported to China where agreed export certification exists.
Health Certificates are being made available for export to China of breeding pigs, sheep skins, cattle hides, greasy wool and dairy products.
Mick Sloyan, BPEX chief executive said: "Exports of pig breeding stock to China are hugely important to UK companies with big orders in prospect. The decision will also give British pig meat producers access to the biggest and fastest growing food market in the world."
