Thame butcher passes away on holiday

 - Published:  01 December, 2010

It is with sorrow we report the death of Michael Newitt, 68, on 7 October, while on holiday in Antigua.

A butcher from an early age, Michael was the proud founder of M Newitt & Sons, based in Thame, Oxfordshire, having trained at Hedges Butchers under the stewardship of Ray Bonsey who now resides in New Zealand. Although semi-retired, he remained very active in the family business, making the Chairman's brawn, frequently serving his customers and often seen on Smithfield Market in the early hours.

He was immensely proud of the business' awards winning Britain's Best Butcher's shop on two occasions, a Grocer Gold award for the Budgens partnership and being voted Britain's Best Family Business by Coutts Bank in 2005. Michael had recently become a liveryman to the Worshipful Company of Butchers.

He was committed to his business and the community of Thame and, in 1986, with the help of his wife Susan, he helped to raise £350,000 for the local hospital. His son James said: "Our father was an amazing business mentor and a generous man."

Michael leaves Susan, James another son, Thomas, and four grandchildren.
