International sales boost Tesco

 - Published:  07 December, 2010

Tesco, the country's largest supermarket retailer, has this morning unveiled an 8.8% surge in third quarter sales.

The company, which is often viewed as a bellwether of the consumer, was boosted by its international performance which saw sales increase by 15.7%.

The strong performance abroad comes as the retailer plans on ramping up its expansion in Asia and the US. Sales in the US benefited from Thanksgiving and improved by 38.5% and like-for-like sales were by 9.85 in the region.

Closer to home in the UK group sales rose by 5% and like-for-likes up-ticked slightly by 1.5% in the more mature market.

The company said it had seen an improved performance from its Finest range, which had achieved double-digit growth in the past two years.
