Meat tray firm invests in Wales

Food container manufacturer D2 Food Systems plans to invest over £3m at its site in Conwy, to build a new facility to manufacture 3m foil containers a week. It is hoped this will create 22 jobs by the end of the year and the investment has the financial backing of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Managing director David Edwards said: "The grant support from the Assembly Government has been hugely important for us. Previously, we had to turn away opportunities, because we could not meet the volume of business that was presented to us.

"The assistance means we are now able to expand much faster than we first anticipated and will be starting a double shift this month - at least six months ahead of schedule. We will have a triple shift in operation by this time next year."

The Hertfordshire firm's facility in Wales was opened to improve delivery in the UK and Ireland and sells to companies involved in the premium meat, poultry, ready meal and dessert sectors.

Welsh Minister for the Economy and Transport Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "D2 Food Systems had identified a market opportunity and invested in the latest technology to become a key player in the UK market.

"The company has made a substantial investment in its new facility in North Wales and support from the Assembly Government has enabled it to expand rapidly, creating a number of well paid jobs in the area."
