Roadworks hit Bradwell Butchery

 - Published:  01 November, 2010

A Norfolk butcher has expressed his relief that roadworks blocking customers from getting to his shop have been completed. Andrew Edmonds, who runs Bradwell Butchery near Great Yarmouth, said the pavement replacement works, which took nearly six weeks, had cost his business £10,000 in lost turnover.

Andrew said his solicitor had written to Norfolk County Council to see if compensation was available, but was told that because it was essential maintenance work, the loss of business was "just tough".

The road reopened on 19 October and Andrew said trade had now returned to normal. "A lot of customers drive here on their way to or from work, so we lost that trade. And a lot of our customers are old ladies, who drive here, so they couldn't shop with us."

Andrew said it had been a difficult time, as he invested £180,000 last year in expanding the business and taking on five new staff, so costs needed to be covered.

"We had a good week last week and, hopefully, it will continue that way," he said. "The pavement looks really nice now, but unfortunately it has cost me £10,000."

Andrew said he was now focusing on being shortlisted in two categories in the local Enterprise GY awards, Great Retail Business and Great Business Growth, and was looking forward to attending the Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards as a finalist.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said the council tried to avoid road closures, but had to prioritise the safety of road workers and the travelling public.
