Consultation launched on animal health
Defra has launched a consultation on legislation that will allow local authorities in England to work more easily together on animal health.
In 2006, the Eves review of the animal health and welfare delivery landscape highlighted that there was a legal obstacle to local authorities carrying out animal health work for other local authorities, and recommended removing it. Stakeholders supported this recommendation.
Defra said it had agreed in its response to Eves, that it would seek to pass the necessary legislation in 2008.
It is proposing a Legislative Reform Order (LRO) to bring in this change, which will bring animal health in line with all other policy areas in England.
Defra is now seeking views on whether an LRO is the best way to achieve this objective.
