Fine for selling customers short

A Newcastle butcher has been fined £680 for offering under weight meat for sale to customers.

Brian Forster, with a stall in Grainger's Market, admitted a series of weights and measures and trade descriptions offences when he appeared before Gosforth magistrates.

The court heard that following complaints from customers Trading Standards Officers had checked 71 packets of meat and found 57 of them to be underweight.

In one instance a T-bone steak was advertised as being 320g when in fact it was only 238g - a difference of more than 25%.

Evidence was also given that Forster had added extra packaging to the meat to make it appear heavier than it was.

Prior to sentencing it was revealed that Forster had previously been cautioned by TSOs for offering underweight meat for sale.

At the time he had blamed staff for incorrectly weighing meat.
