Tesco is SuperMeat Retailer of the Year
Over 500 guests at this year's glittering SuperMeat & Fish Awards at London's Hilton Park Lane saw Tesco and the Co-operative walk away with the two top accolades.
Tesco scooped the Retailer of The Year Award and the Co-operative claimed the Head Office Initiative Award.
The Meat Personality Year of The Award, first introduced last year, went to Stuart Roberts, director of the British Meat Processors Association.
Mark Withers, who collected the prize for Tesco, said: "It's absolutely amazing to win; we have worked really hard for the last three or four years and it is fantastic to have our efforts rewarded. It was a bit of a shock to win to be honest; we looked at the product awards but didn't expect to win overall.
"I think that we were successful because we have a really great team, from our staff to our suppliers. It was definitely a team effort and I can't thank everyone enough for their hard work and support.
"We are all very passionate about what we do and I think that shines through; everyone really believes in what we are trying to create and works hard to make it happen."
Andrew Nicholson, senior technical manager, who collected the Co-operative's Award, said: "We are absolutely delighted with it. A lot of work went into introducing our higher-welfare Elmwood chicken. This is external recognition that we are doing the right thing."
The Co-operative was on a roll and walked away with a second award of overall 'Best Product 2008' with its British Meatballs with Tomato and Bacon Sauce and Italian-style Hard Cheese.
Regional store winners were:
North of England - Asda, Trafford Park
Midlands and East of England - Asda, Milton Keynes
South East of England - The Co-operative, Cranbrook, Kent
South West of England - Tesco, Shaftesbury
Wales - Tesco, Bangor
Scotland - Sainsbury's, East Kilbride
Northern Ireland - Tesco, Newtonbreda, Belfast
