Scotland to host venison festival in tourism drive
Scotland is to host its first venison festival this October as part of a tourism drive in Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms.
To mark the launch, a giant ‘Desperate Dan’ venison pie, complete with antlers, has been baked by chef George McIvor, a member of Masterchefs, the professional chefs’ association of Great Britain.
The celebration of venison runs from 26-31 October and is described as the ultimate gastro treat for foodies keen to sample top-of-the-range game in different ways.
The festival is organised by the Royal Deeside and The Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation (DMO) and involves dozens of local producers, hotels, restaurants and country estates across the region joining together to create a mouth-watering programme of venison-themed activities.
DMO chairman Garry Marsden said: "We know that visitors to Royal Deeside & the Cairngorms enjoy authentic, local food when they holiday – and there can be no finer example of this than the game that roams our estates.
"This unique event will offer first-timers and venison connoisseurs alike the opportunity to taste some of the very finest Scottish venison in some unusual settings. They’ll also get a fascinating insight into the important role that venison plays in Royal Deeside’s Larder.
"In the past, venison has been seen as a meat only for the elite, but we want to show that it can be enjoyed by everyone. From smoked venison sandwiches, broths and burgers to venison haggis and even venison vindaloo, this event aims to offer a mix of traditional and modern venison dishes to suit every palate.
"We’re also hoping to attract local residents along, to encourage them to make the most of the products that can be found right on their doorstep.”
A feast of venison-inspired menus will be offered at eateries across Royal Deeside, and the area’s award-winning chefs will offer tips on how to cook it to perfection at a series of cookery demonstrations.
