Matheson Jess abattoir to close with 11 job losses
An abattoir in Brechin is being closed down, affecting 11 employees in the process, local media is reporting.
An article in The Courier has stated that the Matheson Jess plant in Angus "would be mothballed for the foreseeable future" and staff have been served with their redundancy notices. The decision is set to follow the closure of an incinerator owned by the company in March.
MD Alan Jess is quoted as saying in The Courier: "We are sorry it has come to this. We had a well-trained, dedicated and loyal staff who have been with the company for many years. This has been an extremely difficult and sad decision to make."
He added: "Due to extreme trading conditions, Matheson Jess has taken the decision to close the abattoir. This decision has not been taken lightly and was decided only after 18 months of trying to increase the throughput."
The abattoir and incinerator are part of a meat rendering plant operated by A P Jess Environmental. As MTJ went to press, no one at Matheson Jess or A P Jess were available for comment.
