RSPCA search for welfare retailers nears climax
Consumers are being urged by the RSPCA to vote for the supermarket doing most to improve the welfare of animals in the food chain as part of a competition.
Run in conjunction with The Independent newspaper, the RSPCA People’s Choice Supermarket category is part of the charity’s Good Business awards in October.
The Co-operative, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose are all in contention for the award, with customers given the chance to vote for the store they think is the most animal welfare-conscious from the final shortlist of four.
David Bowles, RSPCA communications director, said: “Through the People’s Choice Supermarket award, we want to give the public a chance to voice their opinions and reward the supermarket they believe has listened to them and made the biggest strides in improving animal welfare. A lot has been happening in the supermarket category and we’ve seen a high standard of entries to this year’s awards.”
He added that the entries showed the companies were responding “to the shift towards responsible consumerism. These companies, which are striving to implement higher welfare standards while still producing a great product, deserve our recognition as they set the standard for others to work towards.”
Last year’s winner was The Co-operative, which received 59% of the 11,000 votes cast. For more information on how to vote, go to www.goodthings.org.uk
