Joanna Lumley blames meat for cancer

 - Published:  10 August, 2010

Seasoned Gurkha campaigner Joanna Lumley has waded into the debate surrounding meat consumption and cancer, claiming the rise in cases is down to eating processed meat.

The vegetarian actress told the Daily Mirror that industrial farming methods and the use of growth hormones were to blame, with additives behind the increase in diseases like bowel cancer.

She told the paper: “When I was young, I heard of one person who had cancer in all my growing up, a friend of my mother. So why have we got so much cancer?

“Could it be the growth hormones in the food we eat, that try to make all the chickens, sheep and cows, more productive? I just find living as a vegetarian keeps me completely fit.”
