Free-range gets the gold

Organised by The Guild of Fine Food, the Great Taste Awards (GTAs) is described as the national benchmark of food awards.

The 2010 GTAs were claimed to have attracted a record number of entries, with 6,021 food and drink products blind-tasted, tested and discussed across two months. The 350 judges included food writers, chefs, deli and farm shop owners, food producers and buyers.

The Copas Turkeys team said it was delighted that its free-range turkeys had been placed among the country's most highly-rated food produce. Jodie Cavaye, sales and marketing manager, said: "Our Great Taste Award comes soon after winning another National Award this year for health and welfare in poultry. We are delighted with both wins, which complement each other perfectly to satisfy what consumers are truly looking for in the meat they consume: healthy living conditions, high animal welfare and, of course, great taste."

Meanwhile, Foxbury Farm in Brize Norton was awarded the gold for its Gloucester Old Spot Loin of Pork. Farmer and owner Colin Dawes said "the close to perfect" star rating awarded by The Guild of Fine Foods highlighted the quality of the meat that the company rears at Foxbury Farm. "It goes without saying that animals that live free-range and without stress are not only happier, but the meat tastes better for it."
