Me and My Shop
My life as a butcher's wife is varied, challenging at times mainly due to looking after four men but also rewarding and, most of all, enjoyable.
What a pleasure it is to taste the wonderful products my husband and his partner source. Our meat is local and that's a fact. Peds, my husband, is a chef, so what he produces in pies, terrines and products such as confit duck all come my way first for testing. It's a hard job, you understand. Peds has made it his ambition to provide the most comprehensive cheese counter around for miles. Luckily we have such a wealth of fantastic produce on our doorstep, that he does not need to look far.
Gareth, the partner, is the most skilled butcher I have ever come across. What that man can do with a knife at speed is fascinating and a joy to watch. He takes real pride in dressing his window in the morning, and definitely has an eye for detail. We have a young apprentice, Dan, who is learning from Gareth a skill I hope will be passed on to my 10-month old son. We also employ Jack, another young man, who is proving to be an astute individual and a hard worker.
Together we are providing our local community with a valuable service, which, in this economic climate, is stable and desirable. I like to think of our shop as an Aladdin's Cave full of treasures and joys you would not be able to find in huge supermarkets.
We have a growing range of charcuterie and delicatessen products, which is proving very popular. We undertake a fair amount of outside catering, such as hog roasts and are embarking on expanding this side of the business further. For my part, I keep them in order and ensure they all have enough tea.
