 - Published:  29 July, 2010

The Lord Mayor of the City of London has made his annual visit to Smithfield this week, taking a tour of the world-famous meat market.

Lord Mayor Nick Anstee, accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Claire Anstee, was escorted by Smithfield Market Tenants’ chairman Greg Lawrence, who introduced them to traders and tenants.

Among those the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress met was Stephen Andrade, who runs Andrade & Sons in the West Market, who explained cuts of meat to them.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress also met Ted Murphy, of Channel Meats, who presented them with an 8kg joint of beef and a 4kg joint of lamb.

Lord Mayor Nick Anstee said: "As one of London’s oldest markets, Smithfield is a fascinating place and it is always a pleasure to visit. It manages to combine state-of-the-art working practices within a magnificent Victorian building, creating a special trading environment. I wish the Market and all the traders the very best success."
