Waitrose named most compassionate retailer

The Most Compassionate Supermarket title was awarded to Waitrose, while Sainsbury’s was named the UK’s Best Volume Supermarket as well as receiving a Good Chicken Award. The Co-operative Food and Marks & Spencer were also recognised for good poultry practice.

Wildlife television presenter Bill Oddie hosted the launch of Compassion in World Farming’s new Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards at St Paul’s Cathedral, where around 30 award-winners received their awards.

Waitrose was praised for its move entirely to British pork and has won the Most Compassionate Supermarket crown now on three occasions.

Quentin Clark, Waitrose head of sustainability and ethical sourcing, said: “A belief in the very highest standards of animal welfare is right at the heart of the way we do business. Our customers too always expect us to treat animals fairly and with respect at all times and we make an enormous effort to make sure this trust is well-placed.”

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s was recognised for its stance taken on animal welfare, such as promoting tree cover for birds through its exclusive Woodland brand of eggs and chicken.

Compassion head of food business Rowen West-Henzell said: “I have worked with Sainsbury’s for nearly five years now. What continues to impress me is their genuine commitment and drive to achieve vast and incredibly ambitious changes for farm animals on a huge scale.

“I am really pleased to recognise them for the tangible difference they are making to millions of farm animals every year and I hope they continue to show such great leadership to the other big four retailers.”
