Telegraph aims to reignite GM debate

According to the Daily Telegraph, UK retailers have acknowledged that meat, fish, eggs and dairy products on their shelves could contain “indirect” GM ingredients.

It claimed every major supermarket in the country said it was unable to provide a guarantee that it was not selling products from animals given GM feed.

Any food containing raw GM ingredients, such as corn or soy, must be labelled as such under European law. However, there is no legal obligation to label when GM products are involved further back in the food chain.

The paper said campaigners were urging retailers to give consumers the choice through clearer labelling.
