The Co-operative expands Elmwood welfare mark

The retailer will expand the standard market into Garlic & Herb Chicken Thighs and Chinese Chicken Kebabs as from July 7.

The move is in line with The Co-operative’s Food Ethical Policy, launched in February 2008, and based on the responses of 100,000 customer-members across the UK. Animal welfare emerged as one of the main areas that members wished to see prioritised by the Co-operative.

British poultry farmers supply the Elmwood grade products, with the retailer's plain ready-to-eat chicken range already meets the criteria.

All Co-operative fresh whole chickens were converted to Elmwood standard or above in October 2007, with own-brand fresh plain chicken fillets and pieces in 2008 and all fresh and frozen seasonal barbecue chicken products and fresh turkeys and crowns in 2009. All fresh plain turkey products were converted earlier this year.
