Dicksons named Coutts' best UK Family Business

 - Published:  10 June, 2010

Meat wholesaler and butcher Dicksons has been crowned UK Family Business of the Year by banking giant Coutts.

The north-east butchery chain, which supplies meat to supermarkets and delicatessens across the country, pipped fellow finalist City Cruises to take the title in the £5m-£25m turnover category.

Judges said the strength of the family values running through the heart of the company and the influence it rides over the company’s business strategy, was the reason why the wholesaler won.

Dicksons MD Michael Dickson said: "In such a tough, competitive market place, brands are increasingly looking for a unique selling point. We can boast tangible 'local producer and family' credentials with confidence, which definitely appeal to today’s consumer.

"Our values and heritage will always be an integral part of the business, but we are constantly looking at ways of improving our offering, which is why we have a talented team of family and non-family members in place to drive the business forward."

The firm employs 221 staff across its chain of 20 retail shops and its South Shields-based head office and production.

Juliette Johnson, Coutts & Co UK Family Business head added: "What really shines through is the strength of the family’s values and culture that runs right through this business, which influence how and why things get done and acts as a real competitive advantage."
