Hard Rock Café backs Meat-Free Monday campaign
An international restaurant chain famed for its burgers has agreed to take part in Sir Paul McCartney’s Meat-Free Monday (MFM) campaign, despite still selling meat on the designated day.
Hard Rock International confirmed it will introduce a special menu, inspired by the MFM campaign, at its restaurant on Old Park Lane, London, but will continue to offer customers its menu of ‘Legendary Burgers’, Bar-B-Que Chicken and Bar-B-Que Ribs on a Monday.
A Hard Rock spokesperson said the optional menu was a gesture, as the former Beatle was headlining its Hard Rock Calling concert on 27 June.
MFM describes itself as an environmental campaign “to raise awareness of the climate-changing impact of meat production and consumption”.
It adds that many people are unaware that “livestock production is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions”, which it claimed is more than the entire transport sector.
The menu will include a Linda McCartney Vegetarian Burger, as well as items such as Wild Mushroom Soup and Grilled Eggplant Lasagne.
Sir Paul said: “I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world.”
Hard Rock cultural attaché Rita Gilligan added: “Almost 40 years on, our customers’ needs are so varied and discerning and I’m so pleased we’re able to now introduce Meat Free Mondays.”
