Thurston to leave Vion
UK and Dutch meat giant Vion has suffered a high-profile casualty with the news its pork boss, Bill Thurston, is to move on. Thurston, who joined the business over three years ago as managing director of the pork business unit, is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.
He said: "I've been there over three years and have achieved a lot of the objectives I set out to. We've achieved a lot, bought a lot and moved the business a long way forward. However, something has arisen which has given me the chance to get involved in a new opportunity."
He added he could not reveal too much about his future direction, only that it would be in the same industry.
Alasdair Cox, Vion's director of corporate affairs, said: "Bill Thurston has taken the decision to leave the business to pursue his career outside of Vion. Bill has made a significant contribution to the development of the pork business unit following the acquisition of the Grampian businesses in 2008. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his significant contribution to the business and to wish him every success for his future."
He said Thurston's duties would be jointly covered by chief financial officer Steve Francis and chief executive Ton Christiaanse until a replacement was recruited.
The news is the second high-profile departure from the Vion Food Group in the UK, following on the heels of Dave Fleetwood, category managing director for fresh pork, who left the business in February.
