New board members for levy bodies

Two new additions have been announced for the boards of Bpex and Eblex. Warwickshire farmer Adam Quinney has been appointed to Eblex, while Essex-based pork processor Marcus Cheale will be taking up a role with the board of Bpex.
Cheale, who looks after the buying and selling of pigs for his family business Cheale Meats, said: “I’ll be on a sharp learning curve, particularly on the pig production side, but that is something I am keen to learn about.
“We operate with contracts and long-term agreements with live pigs, yet when it comes to pork, the nature of our trading means we don’t know until lunchtime what is being delivered that same evening and the following morning. It’s all very reactive.”
Bpex chairman Stewart Houston said: “I would like to welcome Marcus to the board. His experience on the processing side will be extremely valuable to Bpex and the industry. He represents a unique part of the sector, processing large numbers of cull sows, and will bring a fresh view point.”
Meanwhile, 47-year-old Quinney brings a wealth of experience to the Eblex role, adding to the number of positions he has held, including NFU local branch chair, member of the National Livestock Committee, the NFU Animal Health Working Group, and regional chairman for the West Midlands.
He is also a trustee of the Studley College Trust and was the first English Asda beef scholar.
“Eblex has a major role in developing and promoting the English livestock industry. I am passionate about the livestock industry and so wanted to be involved with Eblex,” he said.
“The challenges we face are wide-ranging, with issues like climate change and public perception, that are very broad and faced by livestock enterprises the world over. Domestically we also need to look at marketing our product: Is it good? Can it get better? Is it meeting customer requirements? Are prices sustainable? Are there other markets out there? It’s about us adding value to every part of the carcase.”
John Cross, Eblex chairman, said: “We are delighted someone of Adam’s calibre has agreed to join us. He brings a wealth of experience in the livestock sector and his input will be invaluable.”
