Wrexham butcher quits the market

Giles Jones is leaving Wrexham Butchers Market after a dispute with the local council.

The meat trader was due to take over extra premises in the market, but could not agree terms with Wrexham Council. According to Jones: "I wanted to take over the vacant stall next door and relinquish part of my stall. But in the middle of trying to agree on a rent, the council moved the goalposts."

Rodney Skelland, lead member for regeneration and corporate governance at Wrexham Council said: "We made every effort to assist Mr Jones with his proposed expansion in the market. But his requirements changed from those of expansion to location."

Jones will take on a new shop in Henblas Street after 124 years of his family running a butcher's shop in Wrexham market.

Only two butchers now trade from stalls in the town centre.
