Morrison slices up the competition at the "Sammies"
Morrisons has won Sandwich Multiple Retailer of the Year Award 2008.
The supermarket was voted the best in the industry at Monday's "Sammies", the British Sandwich Association's awards ceremony in Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.
The judges paid particular attention to the retailer's new 'Fresh to Go' range which focuses on freshness and food quality.
Jim Winship, director of The British Sandwich Association, said: "Within the last year Morrisons have shone out from the competition both in terms of their 'fresh' approach to sandwich making and their general market performance compared to others. The quality of their range is very high and their dedication to sourcing fresh ingredients makes them a worthy winner."
"Paul Allman, sandwich buyer at Morrisons, added: "This award recognises that Morrisons in-store sandwiches really are the freshest. We are constantly striving to improve the quality of our ingredients and over the last year we have moved to using free range eggs, British Wiltshire Ham, British Topside of beef and Farmhouse cheddar. In addition we try and add a little spice to the humble lunchbox by introducing some limited editions every few months.
"We're currently offering a Spring lamb sandwich seasoned with red current and mint jelly." The Sammies 2008 come at the end of British Sandwich Week, a week promoting Britain's number one bite."
Morrisons joined the celebrations by serving up a Great British Sandwich. The classic ham, cheese and tomato chutney sandwich comprises of thickly sliced traditionally matured British ham, mature cheddar cheese and a tangy Scottish tomato chutney. The fresh ingredients are sandwiched between two slices of classic farmhouse white loaf, freshly baked in-store.
