Chillibiltong.co.uk wins top biltong prize
Biltong laced with chilli has been crowned overall winner in a competition to find the best British version of the South African meat snack, organised by The South African newspaper.
Chillibiltong.co.uk, based in Bournemouth, won the top prize at the Biltong Taste Awards 2010, beating other UK-based firms such as St Marcus, The Savanna and The African Spot.
The company will now receive £3,000-worth of advertising in the newspaper and its website as well as being the supplier of choice for the publication’s events.
In what was described as the first ever biltong taste-off held in the northern hemisphere, judges, including Saracens rugby player Cobus Visagie, tasted through a number of biltong flavours, such as beef, springbok, ostrich and kudu (a type of antelope).
The cured meat, most commonly consumed with beer, is a popular snack in South Africa and it is hoped that it could be become a favourite in the UK during the summer for the World Cup.
