Record levels of entry for SuperMeat 2010

 - Published:  16 April, 2010

Product judging is well under way for the SuperMeat & Fish Awards 2010, with record levels of entries into this year's competitions.

Judges will be loosening their belts in a bid to assess all the products across the varied categories, as the competition kicks up a gear, and the standard is as high as ever.

This year's event sees Asda, Budgens, The Co-operative, Lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury's all competing for titles in the UK's premier meat industry awards. The event aims to recognise and reward excellence across the supermarket retailing of meat and fish.

These prestigious awards, held at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London, on 1 July, evaluate products and stores, with one retailer being declared the overall SuperMeat Retailer of the Year.

A category new to this year's event is Best Packaging, which will join last year's new introductions, Best Value Product and Most Sustainable.

Returning again to the competition is the Meat Industry Personality of the Year. MTJ is still seeking nominations for the contest and you can put your candidate forward by phoning MTJ editor Ed Bedington on 01293 846567, or email him on ed.bedington@william-reed.co.uk. The deadline for nominations is 7 May and the four candidates with the most nominations will then be put to the vote at www.meatinfo.co.uk.

Bedington said: "We've had some strong winners in the past few years for Meat Personality of the Year, including ABP's Stuart Roberts and Asda's Jim Viggars. Entries are already starting to come in, but if you think you've got this year's winner working with you, drop me a line and get them the recognition they deserve."

This year's event is sponsored by Bpex, Eblex, Freedom Foods, Hybu Cig Cymru Meat Promotion Wales and Vion.
