FREE TRAINING is being made available for all farmers and producers in Wales in a bid to boost their experience in an abattoir.

The programmes will cover a wide range of disciplines, from assessing live animals to checking the carcases. The Cattle and Sheep Selection for Slaughter training programmes are being run by Hybu Cig Cymru/Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) and provides practical demonstrations and hands-on experience at an abattoir.

Instruction includes selecting cattle and sheep for slaughter, plus handling techniques, market speci?cations, supply chain requirements, carcase classi?cation, dressing speci?cations and breed traits.

The training also covers improving your returns when marketing ?nished cattle and sheep. Each course takes up to a dozen farmers on each course. Prys Morgan, industry development manager for HCC, said: "With the move to the Single Payment Scheme, it has never been more important for producers to understand market requirements. These 'selection days' are making a real contribution to improving producer response to supply chain information, and helping farmers contribute to industry ef?ciency."
