Vion confirms cuts at Welsh Country Foods

 - Published:  12 April, 2010

Vion is to cut 181 jobs at its Welsh Country Food plant on Anglesey following a 90 day consultation. 18 of the 181 staff will be relocated to other roles within the business, parent company Vion said.

The jobs are being cut from the WCF plant's packing operations. Meat processing will continue to take place at the site, Vion said.

Rob Smith, group communications controller with Vion, said that the cuts were unavoidable and the result of tough trading conditions. "When we made the decision on Gaerwen in January, it was down to poor trading conditions.

"Those conditions still exist and projections for future volumes indicate that the market ahead remains very challenging."
