Carmarthen man jailed for smokies production

Julian Jones, 46, from Carmarthen was charged after officers from Ceredigion Council’s environmental health department discovered 109 carcases, 133 sheep heads and 560 animal limbs at a farm in Tre Cagal, near Llandysul on 17 December 2008.

The carcases were removed, but in the early hours of 11 January, Jones broke into the lock-up where the animal remains were being stored and attempted to steal them back.

Police stopped Jones and the van carrying the carcases away from the Glan-yr-Afon industrial estate in Aberystwyth.

Jones was charged with possession of food unfit for human consumption, and possession of food without an identified name and supplier.

Judge Peter Heywood said he would be “failing in his public duty” if he did not “impose immediate custodial sentences”.
